Storyboard + Background Illustration
A bored student gets transported to heavenly space-time in a commercial that combines live action with animated backgrounds for Choco Mucho Cookies (a well-known local brand of chocolate snacks).

Project Background
Men On A Mission
With a script & working storyboard on-hand, I was later on on-boarded during production stage to make director's storyboards & background illustrations for the commercial.
The story was simple: Choco and Mucho (the brand mascots) are on a mission to liven-up a student's boring day. The end product was a 30 and 15-second TV spot.

The Process
For this project, I mostly worked directly with the director, JT Pandy.
It was a fun & very collaborative process.
Here's how everything went down!
Thumbnailing
We started with refining the existing agency board by making rough sketches. Pictured below: Our one-hour thumbnail session where we mapped out story sequence, concept, and camera angles.
Storyboarding
I then refined the thumbnails into final, colored storyboards. Composition was vital to guide the production team once they shoot for live video. A lot of the details from this storyboard were greatly helpful making the final compositions and a lot of its details ended up on the backgrounds.

Art Direction
Setting The Look
The director already had a pretty clear direction with the backgrounds & other illustrated elements going in. He showed me a style board that gravitated towards a clean, futuristic, tech-forward look.
For the color palette, we decided on cooler hues (blues & violets) to reflect the futuristic feel.
Sometimes, creative decisions change during pre-production. The final space scene was initially a sequence that involved our characters riding skateboards towards a futuristic city. We also used a warmer, palette. Pictured below: The storyboard scene and background sample that didn't make it into production.
Execution
With a tight deadline, the composition of the backgrounds hugely followed the storyboard's. As the team was shooting the live-action parts, I was illustrating the backgrounds.

Final Output
The final output turned out great and it was a great exercise on backgrounds, composition, and story sequence.
It was well-received by the client & everyone on board.
